According to the latest official Eurostat data, the European aviation market demonstrated robust growth in 2024. Air passenger traffic within the European Union surged to 1.1 billion, marking an impressive 8% increase compared to 2023. This indicates a sustained growth trajectory for Europe, with Greece emerging as a significant contributor to this positive performance.

EU Countries Report Widespread Growth in Air Passenger Traffic

All EU member states recorded an increase in air passenger traffic. Hungary led with a remarkable 19.2% growth, followed closely by the Czech Republic at 18.9%, and Estonia with 17.8%. Conversely, Sweden experienced the mildest increase at 1.3%, while Bulgaria saw a 3.8% rise, and France and Ireland both reported a 4.6% increase.

Strong Momentum in Air Cargo and Mail Transport

Parallel to passenger growth, air cargo and mail transport also witnessed strong momentum, with an 8.7% increase. The most substantial growth was observed in non-EU transport, which climbed by 10.8%, whereas intra-European transport remained relatively stable. Greece distinguished itself with one of the highest increases in cargo, recording a significant surge of 36.7%.

Major European Airports Maintain Dominance, Athens Breaks Through

Activity at major European airports underscores the intensity of transport operations. London Heathrow, Istanbul Airport, Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Amsterdam Schiphol, Madrid Barajas, and Frankfurt continued to hold the top positions in terms of total traffic. Amsterdam Schiphol handled approximately 484,000 commercial flights, while Paris-Charles de Gaulle approached 463,000.

Athens International Airport Enters Top Ten

In line with these upward trends, Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” made its debut in the top ten European airports, handling 31.85 million passengers in 2024. International arrivals at Athens increased by 15.7%, and domestic flights by 7.3%, solidifying Athens’ position as a crucial hub for the wider region.

Opportunities for Greek Tourism and Logistics

This remarkable growth presents new opportunities for Greek tourism and logistics. It enhances the country’s connectivity and opens avenues for further penetration into foreign markets. The strengthening air mobility suggests that Greece is at the forefront of this upward trend.
